The Reconquista: Another Paranoid Fantasy of The Right
“Reconquista” is a term the right wing has been tossing around, particularly since the publicity about illegal immigrants. According to the far right, people like Malkin and O’Reilly, there’s a plot afoot among the Mexicans to take back Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and California because it is Atzlan, the mythological home of the Aztecs. Reconquista is simply the Spanish word for reconquest—traditionally, the drive of Catholic Spain to cleanse the Arabs and Jews from Iberia. According to the current thinking, though, this is a serious plot about taking back into the fold of Mexico the lands lost to the United States during the 1840s through 1850s.
I seriously doubt Mexico has any such plans. The way it is now, her surplus population is vented off across the U.S. border. Mexico can’t take care of the population she had thirty years ago, let alone today. The more tightly packed she becomes, the more dangerous the situation for the republic: too few jobs, too little food, enormous slums, bubbling social discontent. Los de Abajo—The Underdogs— are threatening Mexico’s status quo. Again.
But, there are a lot of people who see the presence of so many Latinos on American soil as a major threat. One Fox commentator said, in effect, white people should have more babies so they won’t be out-numbered... What an old sad sick song, yeah...
And John Tiffany, the author of the piece below, adds another even more paranoid coda: the Mexican Army is filled with mercenaries from North Korea, Russia, and other foreign countries. All of them are eager to invade the U.S.. That’s an old old story, going way back beyond the days of the John Birch Society, back into the tumbled minds of the KKK and other white racist groups.

Some Mexicans and Mexican-Americans want to see California, New Mexico and other parts of the United States given to Mexico. They call it the “reconquista,” Spanish for “reconquest,” and they view the millions of Mexican illegal aliens entering this country as their army of invaders to achieve that takeover. To an extent, they also have actual armed soldiers of the Mexican army, along with mercenaries from North Korea, Russia and other communist or former communist lands, and have already fired upon American Border Patrol officers and terrorized American ranchers. Shockingly, certain politicians in America are willing to sell out to the Mexicans. Here we consider the background to this disturbing development.
