CIA Shuts bin Laden Unit

After spending how many millions of dollars? This is a problem when we continually insist on leaders, and the corollary, that when you cut the head off a movement, it dies. It doesn’t work that way. The Germans learned this during the Resistance in France; we should have learned it fighting the NLF. You can't eliminate a popular movement by targeting a single person.

The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday.

The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said.
