Foley: Rehab & Patriotism the last refuges...
The acceptance of alcoholism as a disease has become, like patriotism, a last refuge of scumbags. Mark Foley announced to the world he believes himself to be an alcoholic, and has gone into treatment for that and “other behavioral problems.”
As if the alcoholism caused the pedophilia, uh-huh. It might play well with the sympathetic set, but there are a few millions of us alkies out here who know that alcoholism has zilch to do with sexual proclivities; the booze might break down some of the social inhibitions that restrict flagrant behaviors, but it sure doesn’t cause people to act in immoral ways.
Now, having said that, I will say that looking at the number of red faces—and stupid utterances—in Congress does lead me to make some cynical observations about the relationship between alcoholism and politics. I don’t think it would really hurt anything if the leadership of both parties checked in for a little rehab…
And I do like the irony of the ads for rehab clinics being posted at the end of the article...

Former congressman Mark Foley (R-Fla.) checked himself into a rehabilitation center over the weekend to undergo treatment for alcoholism, his attorney said today.
Foley resigned Friday after disclosures he had sent sexually explicit electronic messages to teenage House pages.
The attorney, David Roth, told the Associated Press today that Foley accepts responsibility for his actions.
Roth also confirmed the authenticity of a statement Foley purportedly released to news organizations yesterday, the AP said.
"I strongly believe that I am an alcoholic and have accepted the need for immediate treatment for alcoholism and other behavioral problems," Foley said in the statement.
Foley added: "I deeply regret and accept full responsibility for the harm I have caused."

Now ABC News is saying that the Republicans knew about Foley b ack in 2001. Anyone who knew about this situation and hit it should be arrested and charged with child endangerment, among other things. These slimeballs should all go to prison. This is the most outgageous thing the Grand Old Party has done to date. They are all slime!
